Winnipeg Downtown Skywalk System   1 comment

_

The Winnipeg Skywalk System is a network of pedestrian skyways and tunnels connecting a significant portion of downtown Winnipeg.  Considering Winnipeg’s ferociously cold winters and blistering hot summers, this system allows pedestrians to move around downtown 365 days a year in a climate controlled environment.

According to my count there are twenty 2nd level walkway overpasses as well as the Portage and Main underground tunnel system.  I estimate that there is at least 5 kilometres of indoor walkways. If we include the malls and department stores this walkway system may be upwards of 8 kilometres. The system is a great way to get exercise when the windchill outside is completely unbearable.

The CityPlace, Millennium Library and MTS Centre portion, the skywalk from CityPlace to the MTS Centre is one of the widest in the system, below.

The Bay to the St. Mary Avenue segment has an outdoor area, pedestrians have to walk across The Bay parkade.

The Skywalk that crosses over St. Mary Avenue is bright, wide and has a friendly ambience.

The part of the system that is least travelled.  This is the end of the line, this skywalk crosses over Kennedy St. where the connections end.  Nice spacious skywalk.

An independent skywalk this one crosses Kennedy St from the Law Courts building to the Woodsworth building.  The windows are a bit too high. But the plants really create a calm atmosphere.

From this skywalk there is a great view of the Winnipeg Remand Centre (jail).  Notwithstanding the sordid function of the building, it is one of the most architecturally impressive buildings in the city.

  1. What is needed is a map showing apartments and hotels that are connected to or very close to the skywalk. Especially when its frigid outside. 🙂 Most of us don’t care what the temperature is if we only have to walk a block or two.
