Armstrong Flight Research Center is NASA’s primary center for atmospheric flight research and operations. NASA Armstrong is chartered to research and test advanced aeronautics, space and related technologies that are critical to carrying out the agency’s missions of space exploration, space operations, scientific discovery, and aeronautical research and development.

Located at Edwards, California, in the western Mojave Desert, Armstrong is uniquely situated to take advantage of the excellent year-round flying weather, remote area and visibility to flight test some of the nation’s most unique aircraft and aeronautical systems.

Some examples of the research undertaken: Oblique Wing Research, SST and Sonic Boom Research, Autonomous Formation Flight Control, Atmospheric Research, Vortex study,  Develop Dyna-soar launch pad abort procedures, Variable Sweep Transition flight experiment,  F-15 – Thrust Vectoring, to name a few.

It is quaint, but a slight drawback is the facing house fronts are quite close, but a lot of trees take care of that.

World’s Youngest Baby Acrobat Toddles Above Bloodthirsty Tigers   Leave a comment

Markosun News Wire

WTF? In China, two (dumb) adults and one three-year-old girl nearly ate it… with more than a few hungry Siberian tigers waiting below.

On her first step Xiaoyan, of the Jiangxi Elite Children Arts Troupe, was nearly blown off the wire by a strong gust of wind, arousing terrified screams from the audience.

The toddler held no balancing pole, simply using her outstretched arms to keep balance.

It took the girl more than 10 minutes to walk 50 metres, before she was plucked from the wire by a fellow performer.

Just a few feet in front of her two men performed an equally remarkable stunt, with one riding a bike on the thin wire as another hung below him on a ladder.

The men were inches away from tragedy when a curious Siberian tiger leapt into the air and grabbed hold of the ladder – nearly causing the pair to topple into the enclosure.

Arts troupe director Zhang Shenwen said Xiaoyan was the world’s youngest high wire walker, and had been training since she was just one.”

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wipes out on bicycle breaking leg   Leave a comment

~

(CNN)U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry broke his right femur in a cycling accident in Scionzier, France, on Sunday morning, State Department spokesman John Kirby said.

The injury is near the site of a previous hip surgery, so Kerry will return to Boston on Sunday for treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital with his doctor who did the prior surgery, the spokesman said in a statement. He was en route as of late Sunday morning, a senior State Department official said.

Kerry regrets that he won’t be able to visit Spain as planned, and he also won’t be able to attend the Paris counter-ISIL coalition ministerial meeting on Tuesday. He will participate in the Paris meeting remotely, Kirby said.

(ISIL is another name for the terror network, ISIS.)

The secretary is stable, his injury is not life-threatening and he should make a full recovery, Kirby said.

The Secret Service was trying to get Kerry to ride a safer bicycle as his control seemed to be deteriorating over time. He tried the bicycle below but felt embarrassed riding the 4 wheeler. He will now ride it in the future his doctor said.

Robot can jump over obstacles while running   Leave a comment

:

The military applications for this are many I am sure.

MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) researchers have achieved yet another leap in robotic development by programming their cheetah robot to jump hurdles as it runs. According to the Institute’s news office, it is the first four-legged robot to run and leap over obstacles completely on its own. To jump, the robot detects an obstacle in its path, estimates its distance and height, then adjusts its stride to push up and over the object. During experiments the robotic cheetah successfully cleared 18-inch tall hurdles.
